History
It was 1894 when the early settlers of the then Canning District formed the Canning Agricultural and Horticultural Society to hold an annual flower show in the Agricultural Hall, which in those days was the venue for community interaction. The district followed the reaches of the Canning River where now modern suburbs are located. The flower show has continued to be an integral part of the annual Canning Show to this day.
What is the Society?
The Society is an organisation of volunteer persons associated with one or other of community activities conducted on the premises of the Society, and governed by its Constitution. The objects for which the Society is formed, includes the development of agricultural and horticultural resources by encouraging public participation in all forms of cultural affairs, by use of buildings and premises under its control.
Who are the ‘Canning River Gardens’?
It is a group of home gardeners who gather together to learn how best to obtain results from a flower garden and enjoy participation in a pleasurable pass time. It provides an opportunity for the average home gardener to join with others in producing beautiful annuals, perennials, bulbs and flower climbers for exhibition for others to appreciate the wonder of flowers.
What other interest is there?
As the name implies, the conservation of our natural resources is of vital concern, particularly the environment of the Canning River as it passes through the home land of many enthusiastic gardeners. We all have a responsibility in this direction.
How does the ‘Canning River Gardens’ operate?
The gardening group gather on the first Tuesday bi-monthly at 7.30pm in the Liddelow Pavilion, Cannington Exhibition Centre, to participate in discussion on a variety of flowering plants, and to hear guest speakers on how to grow a successful garden.
Membership is a simple matter! Those attending become eligible to join the Society as a member, gaining the privilege of belonging to an historic and well established body of community volunteers. An annual membership fee of $15.00 applies.
How do I exhibit at the Canning Show?
The Society publishes its Show Schedule with details of each exhibit, prizes and information on entries. Contact the Administration Office, phone 9451 1820 to receive a schedule and entry form or go to Canning Show, Schedule of Entries to download a copy. Then purely deliver your exhibit to the Flower Hall as advised in the schedule. All entries will be open for judging and public display during the course of the Show.
